28 years ago this week the remains of Sally McNelly and Shane Stewart were recovered from the area of Twin Buttes. This brutal double homicide has been an active investigation throughout the years and has involved many local and State agencies. Today, the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office would like to take the opportunity to announce that the FBI has been asked to join the investigation and will be actively involved henceforth. After consulting with the FBI it was determined that their involvement will consist of Behavioral Case Analysis, Investigative assistance and the use of additional FBI resources as needed.

Both Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly were last seen alive the night of July 4th, 1988. Sally’s remains were recovered on 12 November and Shane Stewart’s on 14 November, 1988. Both had died from a gunshot wound. This crime was committed locally and persons within this community have valuable information relative to this investigation. Those persons are asked to come forward and do the right thing. Family members and friends have long been involved in this investigation and are anxious for closure.
