SCAM ALERT: SHERIFF'S OFFICE WARNS PUBLIC OF JAIL BOND PAYMENT SCAM

Date Posted: 04/15/2025

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office (TGCSO) is alerting the public to a recent scam targeting families of individuals currently incarcerated in the Tom Green County Detention Center.

Scammers have been contacting relatives of inmates, falsely claiming that due to jail overcrowding, their loved one is eligible for release.    Scammers state their loved one is eligible to wear a GPS boot, but only if a bond payment is made immediately. These fraudulent callers may request payment via wire transfer, gift cards, or other non-traceable methods.

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office strongly emphasizes:

"The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office does not solicit or accept payment over the phone for inmate release under any circumstances. If you receive such a call, it is a scam. Hang up and report it immediately."

These scams are often sophisticated, using publicly available information to sound credible. In some cases, caller ID may be spoofed to appear as if it's coming from a government number.

If you or someone you know has been targeted by this scam, please report the incident to the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office at (325) 655-8111.
